Being able to work in the day laborer wage theft project has been great and it’s been a good opportunity to hear their stories and some of the problems they have faced over the years. Going out and conducting surveys has been productive and some people were happy to cooperate, but we realized many people did not want to participate in the surveys. Some of these reasons included a language barrier, since many of the workers did not dominate English and spoke little Spanish (many spoke the Guatemalan dialect of Mam).
Working alongside Street Level Health Project, a community organization that also focuses on and provides resources for day laborers, was a very big help – we were able to largely increase the surveys conducted, especially because one of their members spoke Mam. Because many workers were very familiar with and recognized Street Level Health Project, the day laborers were more willing to help us with our project. I also gave a short presentation at Street Level’s Oakland Workers’ Collective on July 30 and the workers were willing to help and take the survey. It was very nice seeing how two groups came together to achieve one goal to help day laborers.

Ha sido una buena oportunidad poder trabajar en el proyecto del robo de sueldo entre jornaleros y me encanto poder escuchar sus historias y los problemas que ellos han enfrentado sobre los años. Llendo a hacer encuestas ha sido muy productivo y algunos de los trabajadores estaban felices de cooperar y ayudarnos con el proyecto, pero nos dimos cuenta que muchos no querían tomar parte en las encuestas. Una de las razones porque algunos no querían ayudar era porque hay un obstáculo lingüístico porque muchos de ellos no hablaban inglés y no hablaban español (muchos de ellos hablaban el dialecto guatemalteco de Mam).
Poder trabajar con Street Level Health, una organización comunitaria que ayuda a los jornaleros y ofrece recursos para los jornaleros, fue una ayuda muy grande – pudimos hacer más entrevistas, especialmente porque uno de los miembros hablaba Mam. Gracias a su ayuda, incrementamos las encuestas que hicimos porque los jornaleros conocían las organización y confiaban en ellos. También di una presentación en una junta de la Cooperativa de Trabajadores de Oakland y muchos de los trabajadores se pusieron de acuerdo para ayudarnos y tomar la encuesta. Me gusto colaborar con otro grupo para lograr la misma meta de ayudarles a los jornaleros.
